Vigilant Type | Patterns of Protection
This started as a personal project inspired by my photo archive of Teusaquillo’s doors and windows. Growing up in this neighborhood, I was fascinated by its blend of European influences and local adaptations, especially in the decorative window fences that protect and adorn its homes.
From this archive, I developed two modular grids based on two fence patterns, which later became Vigilant Type.
This publication highlights Teusaquillo’s window fences as both functional and cultural symbols. By documenting their geometric patterns and transforming them into grid systems, it reinterprets the neighborhood’s architectural identity through graphic design. It also explores how system-based design generates diverse outcomes while maintaining its own visual beauty.
Using my photo archive as a reference, I analyzed the repetitive structures of the fences and developed two modular grids. By experimenting with their geometric units, I explored letterform possibilities, which led to the creation of two versions of Vigilant Type.
